Showtime with Vhong Navarro, Anne Curtis and Kim Atienza

I’ve watched the first episode of Showtime when it aired last last Saturday and it’s a mess. (But it can be good and bad mess.)

It’s a lot of shows rolled into one. Ok. That’s why they called it a variety show instead of a talent show. Trying to be different from Talentadong Pinoy but still trying to be the same.

First off, Kuya Kim Atienza doesn’t belong here. He’s much better being Matanglawin than hosting a variety show. And being the trivia wiz kid doesn’t help. The trivia he is giving every now and then is distracting.

Audience Votes

And then why do you really want to hear what the audience votes are when their votes don’t count? If you’re giving them vote cards, at least give their votes some value. You can at least average their votes into a single vote.

I think the vote of the audience is more credible than the vote of the judges in this case. Because what these contestants really come here for is to entertain the audience (and the viewers).

Do the judges have criteria? How can they be more objective than the audience?

I am glad that viewers now get a chance to oust a jury member. Too bad you have to spend your cell phone load for it. (I’m guessing you will receive a download you don’t really want to receive after voting, and you pay for it.)

Replace Anne Curtis

And then I am thinking maybe viewers should have the chance to vote for a new host to replace Anne Curtis. She’s really beautiful but maybe I would want to try how Angel Locsin would look on that show. Or maybe Bea Alonzo. Even just for a day. I would willingly spend my P15 load to vote on that.

It doesn’t have to be the top stars. Try Maricar Reyes.

Just Sing and Dance?

I’m wondering what other talents the contestants would have aside from dancing and singing. Or it is made only for groups who sing or dance?

I’m starting to think that these contestants really auditioned for Pilipinas Got Talent but when they were not accepted, they were told to audition for Showtime instead.

ABS-CBN should be reserving the biggest talents for Pilipinas Got Talent, right? Or else both of it will just flop.

Soundtrack

The part I like most about the show is the soundtrack. It doesn’t sound like a soundtrack for a talent show. It’s light and uplifting. I wonder if it’s from Lito Camo or from Rocksteddy and Itchyworms. I’m guessing it’s from the latter.

Other parts I like is when Vhong Navarro gives his comments after every performance, usually identifying the contestants’ look-alike. One more is Vice Ganda’s punch lines you can easily tell he got from being a stand up comedian.

The best part I think is the band jamming sessions. Rock and roll!

Conclusion

So far, Showtime seems to be like filler program while the executives look something else to show on the noon time slot.

But with some improvements and innovation, it may have a chance to last for more than a year.
